"We fight liver cancer with a quiver full of arrows."
-- Dr. Mark Roh
|
At Allegheny General Hospital's Liver Program, our philosophy is
that each liver cancer case is individual and should be treated as
such. There are many treatment options available for patients today,
and all of them should be considered as part of an individual
treatment plan. In some cases, the best approach may require a
combination of therapies (i.e. chemotherapy and surgery) which can
potentially result in a cure. In other cases, aggressive treatments
can often prolong a patient's life with a good quality of life. The
option available today range from more traditional chemotherapies to
newly developed techniques. We believe that new and innovative
treatments as well as early diagnosis
are powerful weapons to be used to combat the effects of liver
cancer.
We also feel that patient education is an important part of the
process. Patients have both the right and the responsibility to
understand their illness in order to participate in treatment plans.
Patients who understand basic liver function and the development of
liver cancer have the advantage of being able to discuss options with
the doctor and better understand the potential results. The purpose of
this web site is to provide liver cancer patients and their families
with the basic knowledge needed to better communicate with their
physicians. If you are looking for more information about liver
cancer, visit our web resources
section.
